Media members pick Clemson 4th in ACC

We're picked to finish behind Florida State, Miami and Virginia. (More here.) That doesn't sound too bad, but I would have picked us third.

BUT WATCH OUT FOR MIAMI: The Greenville News' Bart Wright thinks the 'Canes will be the team to beat in the ACC this year.

EXPANSION ELATION: The State's Jon Solomon looks at the impact of adding Miami and Virginia Tech to the ACC.

HIS JOB IS SAFE: And Clemson coach Tommy Bowden is facing different challenges.

BOWDEN CRITICIZES RECRUITING RULES: Clemson's coach thinks tougher rules aren't necessary.

ROSTER UPDATED: I've updated the links to the player bios in the lefthand column. Enjoy.

MORE PLAYING TIME AHEAD? The ACC is supporting a proposal to allow football players to have five years of eligibility.

Clemson a hot topic at ACC media confab

OK, maybe not. But there are a couple of stories out there today about the Tigers. First is a pair of articles from The State. Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is profiled here (and here, too), and star linebacker Leroy Hill gets scrutinized here.

The Greenville News has a Bart Wright column looking ahead to the season and notebook-type thingee that includes some Clemson-related items.

RIVALRY HEATS UP: Clemson's 26-10 victory over Florida State in 2003 has enlivened a rivalry that has failed to live up to the hype generated after the Seminoles joined the ACC in the early 1990s and it looked like the game would be the league's biggest every year. And this year's game could be especially interesting in the wake of fisticuffs between Clemson and FSU athletes at the NCAA track and field championships last month.

I'm back, again

Sorry I've been gone so long. I've been taking care of some family business. I'll try to catch up.

TOMMY BOWDEN -- CLEMSON LEGEND? Well, it's a little early for that title yet, but Bart Wright thinks Clemson's football coach can reach the level of Frank Howard or Danny Ford. And here, Bowden talks about high expectations for the season during his annual media golf outing. And here's another Bart Wright column about Bowden.

SUMMER SAMPLER: We're now up to the USC game.

IT'S A SELLOUT: Clemson has sold out of season tickets for the first time in school history. That's amazing.

STUCKEY IN THE MIDDLE: Clemson receiver Chansi Stuckey will have a much higher profile this season after the departure of Derrick Hamilton.

FAKE TURF, COLLAPSIBLE POSTS: Clemson is in the process of converting one of its practice fields to artificial turf. The school will also install collapsible goal posts in Death Valley.

FORMER AD RETURNS: Former Clemson athletic director Bill McLellan will be assisting with fundraising for the WestZone project at Death Valley.

Lost another one to bad academics

Another recent signee, defensive lineman Jacquez McKissic, has failed to qualify academically. He'll try again in December.

That's six signees we've lost since the spring. Not too good.

'BIG ED' DIES: Former Clemson player Ed Martin, who played on Clemson's undefeated 1948 Gator Bowl team, died Wednesday.

TIGER TRACKS COUNTDOWN: We're up to No. 13 in the best plays of 2003. Check it out.

Lambert won't play at Clemson in the fall

Highly recruited offensive lineman Corey Lambert of Greenville, S.C., will be going to prep school or junior college in order to boost his grades, but he hopes to enroll at Clemson in January.

This is a real blow. Lambert was our top recruit in 2004. I just hope he gets his schoolwork together. We need guys like him.

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS: Tigernet's Dan Scott offers his predictions for the outcome of Clemson's games in 2004.

WHITEHURST ON O'BRIEN WATCH LIST: Clemson quarterback Charlie Whitehurst is one of 42 candidates named to the Davey O'Brien Watch List for the O'Brien Award, given annually to the top quarterback in college football. Congratulations, Charlie.

TIGER TRACKS COUNTDOWN: The official Clemson site has the No. 14 top play of 2003. Give it a look.

'TIGER SOURCE' PREVIEW: Tigernet has a couple more preview stories from Mickey Plyler's new project, Tiger Source. Check 'em out here, here and here.

I'm back, for now

Sorry about the lack of posts over the past few days. The real world is intruding, as it soon will be again in the next week. I'll try to catch up.

MORE SUMMER SAMPLING: We're up to N.C. State, Miami, Duke and South Carolina.

JOHN EDWARDS -- TIGER: Blogger Jeff Quinton has been doing some good reporting on Democratic vice presidential hopeful John Edwards' short football career at Clemson. Check it out here and here.

TIGER TRACKS COUNTDOWN: The official Clemson site is doing its annual countdown of the top plays of the 2003 season. No. 15 is posted now. Check it out.

SO LONG, SKEETER: I'm sorry I'm late posting this, but I was saddened to learn of the death of Marvin "Skeeter" Francis, a longtime fixture in the ACC. Here are a couple of columns celebrating his long and colorful life.

ACC EXPANSION: Well, as of July 1, Virginia Tech and Miami officially became members of the ACC. Sorry I missed that landmark, too. To make up for it, here are a couple of columns that are worth reading.

New Web site for WestZone unveiled

The WestZone expansion project at Clemson's Death Valley has a spiffy new Web site that tells all about the plan. Check it out.

A PROFITABLE BOWL TRIP: The State is reporting that Clemson's victory over Tennessee was more than a win on the field; the athletic department made a net profit of $301,352. Not too shabby.

A PEEK AT THE DEACS: The Greenville News takes an early, early look at Clemson's 2004 season opener against Wake Forest.

NEW CLEMSON SITE: Tigernet has a few sample stories from recruiting guru Mickey Plyler's new project, Tiger Source. Check out the samples here, here and here.
