Clemson ranked No. 8 in season's first USA TODAY poll

The Tigers are eighth in the season's first USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll. It's Clemson's highest-ever ranking in the preseason poll. Their opponent on Aug. 31, Georgia, is ranked fifth.

The South Carolina Gamecocks will open the season ranked seventh.

Florida State is ranked 12th. Miami, Virginia Tech and North Carolina were among the other teams receiving votes.

Full disclosure: I work at USA TODAY, but not in Sports. I have nothing to do with how the poll is conducted.
